WHACK A CHARGE ON THE SINGLE-USE CUPS

You’ve stepped up already and have taken your place in Again Again’s system for positive change on single-use cups (SUCs). You are showing your leadership stripes when it comes to waste in the coffee industry. But are your customers coming to the party?

For many of you, your passion and drive has translated into great customer adoption, an admirable impact on cup waste, and big savings on the single-use cups that you no longer have to buy. But some may be finding that customers are not joining in like you thought they would.

Money talks. Charging people to use a single-use cup will make them think twice about doing it. And also make them think about about using the Again Again share system. That won’t cost them anything… provided that the cup comes back. They still get their convenience.

Step ONE:

Decide on your surcharge.

Think carefully… we recommend 30c.

10c is still good though, as charging something is a step forward from charging nothing. A small charge will be easier to defend - customers won’t see it as a money making venture on your part - and the conversation will likely focus more on the environmental implications than your increased profits. Is it unlikely that you will lose coffee sales for a smaller charge.

50c (or more!) will have a massive impact on SUC use, but might also impact your coffee sales, at least over time. Remember though that you have to lose a lot of coffee sales to get close to the impact that buying SUCs has on your bottom line. Check out our dynamic worksheet.

It’s up to you at the end of the day. You know your customers and your team.

Disposable cups, even the compostable ones, almost all end up in the landfill where they breakdown and produce methane. It’s madness that we use these things for such a short period of time and then just ditch them - something has to change!

We hope you join the movement to be waste-free! Be the change. Bring your own cup, Borrow one of ours, or pay the price!
